CMU is from the Mid-American Conference and started the year with a win at San Jose State (as a 14½ point underdog) and a loss to Pitt from the ACC. They are one of only a few teams in college football that play 3 quarterbacks. Joe Labas is the starter. He transferred from Iowa in 2024 and started the first 6 games for the Chips last year before an injury ended his season. Angel Flores is a transfer from Northern Arizona. In his two games this year, he has thrown 6 passes and rushed the ball himself 21 times. He is clearly their change-of-pace QB. Soph Jadyn Glasser has also played in each game.

CMU is now coached by Matt Drinkall (I'm sure the students are having a field day with that name). He played college football briefly at Iowa and was the O-Line coach at Army the past few years. As you might expect, CMU runs the ball a lot and throws short passes to maintain ball control. They are 8th in the nation in Time of Possession in the young season. But they don't have any big plays. So far, the Chips have had only 4 plays over 20 yards on the season. They want to control the ball and limit possessions.

The Wolverine Den Trivia

Q: Michigan's schedule this year has only 6 home games and no consecutive homes games for the season. When have these two unique events happened before?

A: Michigan last played only 6 home games in 2017. And 2012. And many other years back in the 11 game seasons. The last time we did not have any consecutive home games was 1937.

On defense, however, CMU has only averaged 1 sack per game and only 2½ Tackles for Loss per game. Plus, they are 131st in the nation (out of 134 teams in FBS) with the most passing yards allowed. They are also undisciplined, ranking 108th in most penalties.

This should be a relatively easy game for the Wolverines. We are way more talented and are playing at home. But this CMU team is not a pushover. They will limit our possessions by slowing down the game. Last week at Pitt, CMU trailed by only 7 with under 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. They gave up 21 points from there (including a TD with :45 seconds to play). They could keep this close for a while. But this team was 4-8 last year and 2-6 in the MAC. It won't be close at the end.

This is the start of the 2-game suspension of Sherrone Moore so Biff Poggi will be the acting head coach for the game. Michigan is 4-0 all-time against CMU and 36-1 all time against teams from the MAC.

The Wolverines are a 27½-point favorite.

Post-Game Summary

The Michigan Wolverines got back to winning with a dominating 63-3 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas. It was the most points scored by the Wolverines since 2010, when Michigan scored 65 against Bowling Green and 67 against Illinois. The 616 total yards for the Maize and Blue was the most since 2016 against Maryland.

Bryce Underwood was unleashed. In the first half alone, Bryce had 211 passing yards and 86 rushing yards for a total of 297 yards. Justice Haynes had his 3rd straight 100-yard rushing game with 104 yards on only 14 carries. Haynes is now 6th in the nation in rushing yards. Jaishawn Barham had 2 sacks in the first quarter and led the team in tackles. But this was a game where EVERYONE played. Over 100 Michigan players saw game action. And it was one of the most dominating performances in decades.
