Game Preview

The University of Michigan Wolverines return to the friendly confines of Michigan Stadium to take on the Washington Huskies on Saturday. This will be the 3rd meeting between Michigan and Washington in the last 21 months after Michigan dominated the National Championship game and then Washington won a close game over the Wolverines last September in Seattle. The Huskies lost all seven games on the road last year but have beaten both Washington State and Maryland on the road this year. Washington State is really bad, and Maryland blew a 20-0 3rd quarter lead over Washington.

Washington is a good team. They are 5-1 on the season with their only loss to Ohio State. Their quarterback, Demond Williams is 3rd in the country in completion percentage at 74.1% and 5th in passing efficiency. He has 10 TDs and only one interception this year. Last week against Rutgers, he threw for 402 yards and rushed for 136 yards, giving him 538 yards of Total Offense. Wow! The top running back is Jonah Coleman, averaging 86 yards per game. The top receiver is Denzel Boston, averaging 74 yards and has 6 TDs.

Washington's defense has improved greatly since last year. They are 6th in the country, allowing only 82.8 rushing yards per game and 3.1 yards per carry. They did give up 493 yards last week to Rutgers.

This is another critical game for the Maize and Blue. Yes, they can still make the College Football Playoff, but there is no room for error. Winning their last 6 games, given their strength of schedule, would very likely put the Wolverines in the playoff at 10-2. And Michigan is currently favored in each of those remaining games , with the exception of the last game against Ohio State. Washington is thinking the same thing. They have home games left against Illinois and Oregon and a road game against UCLA. But a 10-2 record is certainly possible, if they can beat Michigan on Saturday.

The Wolverine Den Trivia

Q: Washington QB Demond Williams had 538 yards of Total Offense last week against Rutgers. Who holds the Michigan record for most Total Offense in a game?

A: Devin Gardner holds the Michigan record for most total offense in a game. Gardner had 584 yards, 503 passing and 81 rushing, on October 19, 2013 against Indiana. Jake Ruddock is 2nd on the list with 504 yards, and Denard Robinson is 3rd with 502 yards.

The formula hasn't changed. The winner of this game will be the one that runs the ball more effectively, controls the clock and doesn't turn the ball over. Washington is not a good road team and the Wolverines have a huge home field advantage.

Michigan leads the all-time series with Washington 9-6.

In what looks to be an even match on paper, the Wolverines are a 6-point favorite.

Post-Game Summary

The Michigan Wolverines beat the Washington Huskies 24-7 at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. It was a dominating performance by the Wolverines who outgained the Huskies 417 yards to 249 and held the ball for over 37 minutes. Washington QB, Demond Williams, who had 538 yards of total offense last week, was held to a meager 190 yards. And the Maize and Blue did this all without Justice Haynes, Brandyn Hillmon, Rod Moore, Marlin Klein and Hogan Hansen, while losing Evan Link and Rayshawn Benny to injury during the game. It was a "next man up" mentality. Jordan Marshall took over the as the lead running back and had 133 yards on the ground plus another 20 in receiving. Zack Marshall and Deakon Tonelli took over as the tight ends and combined for 8 receptions for 110 yards with a TD. Blake Frazier took over at left tackle and performed well. Michigan had 187 yards rushing and gave up only 1 sack. The injuries are certainly a concern but not to be long term.

Did I neglect to mention Bryce Underwood. The freshman had his best game of the year as he continues to develop. Bryce completed 21-27 passes for 230 yards and 2 TDs, and his receivers dropped 4 passes.
