Tailgate Attendance: 9

Illinois 38 - Michigan 13

Memorial Stadium

October 31, 2009 - 2:30 p.m. CT

Game Summary

Football, especially college football, is a game of momentum and emotion. After yielding an opening touchdown drive to the Illini, Michigan dominated the rest of the first half. The offense scored 13 straight points and the defense held Illinois to only 12 yards of offense. On the opening drive of the 2nd half, Tate Forcier hit Roy Roundtree in stride on a slant and he was gone. Michigan had taken a 20-7 lead and all was good. But upon video review, Roundtree’s knee was down before the ball crossed the goal line and the touchdown was taken away. No problem, Michigan had it 1st and goal at the Illinois 1-yard line. After failing to score in three attempts, Brandon Minor got the call on 4th down. He was hit short of the goal line but spun and fell into the end zone for the touchdown. Michigan again took the lead 20-7. But, upon another video review, it was determined the Minor’s left elbow hit the ground before he crossed the goal line and the touchdown was reversed. Illinois took over at their own 1 yard line. Six plays later, the Illini scored on a 70-yard run to take the lead 14-13. Michigan was devastated after twice scoring touchdowns and then coming away with nothing and then to give up a 99-yard scoring drive. From there, the momentum of the game was squarely against the Wolverines. They were unable to stop the Illinois offense while the Michigan offense failed to finish any drives.

It was as disappointing of a loss as could be, going from the brink of victory to being dominated. It is time for this team to step up and play a strong game on both sides of the ball. Their bowl life depends on it.
